There are 42 entrants in the RTYC Triangle Race (formerly the Yachting Monthly Triangle Race) which started from Torquay on Sunday. The numbers have already been somewhat reduced by retirements on the outbound leg to Crosshaven.

The fleet leaves Crosshaven at midday on Friday, probably into another gale, and the leaders should be arriving in Trequier overnight on Saturday. Inevitably this will lead to some crowding in the marina from Sunday to Wednesday when the fleet leaves for the final leg back to Torquay. You might also find it more difficult to book tables in the restaurants and the bars will be quite lively.

As a founder of the race back in 1982, I apologise to visiting yachtsmen for any inconvenience this might cause. The answer might be to join-in yourself next time (in two years). The format is for some serious partying interrupted by a bit of semi-serious two-handed racing. Ordinary cruising boats form the bulk of the fleet, with many husband/wife, father/son etc crews.

Gezzus James do you seriously ask (expect) these people to race in the current conditions. I know Kent ain't exactly West Country but there's enough wind up here to blow a tinker off his missus.
Peter.

They started on Sunday in light airs. The winds of yesterday and today were well forecast. Some diverted to harbours from Salcombe westwards, most carried on. The wind didn't fill in until after the fleet rounded Land's End, but they had a lively run across the St Georges Channel.

The restart from Crosshave may be delayed if a severe gale is blowing. Remember, these boats are equipped and scrutineered to ORC Category 2 and are expected to be able to stay at sea in severe weather conditions. If the crew choose not to, that is good and prudent seamanship, which is also what the event is all about - it is always the skipper's decision whether to sail or not.
