Nothing's like the sound of a Detroit Diesel.

Re: Nothing\'s like the sound of a Detroit Diesel.

You should hear ours inside the boat house (tyne class lifeboat) on start up, goose bumps evertime! and at full chat gorgeous. Change awhile ago to the Dedec controls, waste of space went back to the mechanical stuff much better.

Now if you really want to hear the best sounding two stoke in the world listen to a T34 V12 34litre two stroke (Russian tank) on start up , gadzooks! knickers drop from 100 yards away /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif mind you the air start was pretty cool too till we blew it up /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Do like the T34 ... but still partial to the DD's ..... at idle I can balance a 50p on the governor of mine without it falling off. Exhaust note is rather nice as well, despite going through a water trap ....

Re: Nothing\'s like the sound of a Detroit Diesel.

They all sound like Routemaster buses to me - not pleasant.

IMO there's nothing like the sound of big petrol engines as in offshore power boats or even my twin 7.4l Mercruisers.
But chacun etc.

Re: Nothing\'s like the sound of a Detroit Diesel.

Well I think they are absolutely horrible, having had to hear them for up to 10 hours a day, every day for 2 months at a time, I just want to get away from those damned noisy thngs any time I hear them.

Re: Nothing\'s like the sound of a Detroit Diesel.

Just been reading a story of US race champion Ben Kramer who was arrested for drug smuggling to the tune of milions, he owned the Apache race boat co, the miami Herald reads....

"At the time of his arrest, Kramer was under investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration, Internal Revenue Service and New Scotland Yard.

Dubbed Operation Man, the investigation has targeted marijuana smuggling and money laundering schemes in Britians Isle of Man , the U.S. Virgin Islands and the tiny European principality of Liechtenstein.

The Illinois indictment returned Wednesday pressed DEA and IRS agents into action, DEA spokesman Jack Hook said. When agents learned that Kramer's associates were liquidating his assets -- estimated at $15 million -- they moved to seize them, Hook said."

Ah ha now I know why SVII keeps zooming over here on his boat. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

er, actually I don't think he had a boat in 1987 /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

This was the man himself doing what he did best, em, well maybe second best /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

They are two a penny around here, including the 1500-2000hp petrol catamarans. Now when they rev up, it sends shivers through you - and deafens you!

Re: Nothing\'s like the sound of a Detroit Diesel.

I love the sound of my Detroits in the morning

******************************************

Brings back memories of work boats arriving at our ship anchored of some foreign port...

In Korea noticed a different workboat tied up each night...found out the owner was using my lads as a cheap source of maintenance for engines!!!!!!!!!

Seeing as he also ran the R and R establishments ashore we came to a suitable arrangement.....We provided food....he provided beer and girls for a beach party on a deserted island....My street cred went up another 10 points

The other sound I have memories of which is caught so well in the James Bond "You only Live Twice is the sound of Bollinders in the fishing boats as the fleet sailed at dawn.
