....anybody else got any skeletons in the cupboard?? ]

Somewhere in the archive of this forum is my old "I ran aground thread". This happened in approach to Howth Marina Dublin, within 50 meters of RNLI station in fact. Like you a momentary lapse of concentration. It was my first trip out on our brand new Phantom 50 with all the family on board. I still cringe when I think about it :o

Slight parking accident there Steve..
My confession is one of Diplomatic relations I am afraid.

On a delivery of a 36 ft Napier Fishing boat to Sweden.
Bad weather forced me into the European canal system.

The boat was never designed to go up canals.
The draft and height restrictions for the Emms Jade meant I had to remove the mast on the wheelhouse.
I couldn't however remove the trawl gantry aft, but it fitted under the height gauge.

All was well, as all the swing bridges allowed us through.
About midday I reached an arched bridge..
I approached at about 4knts, which with the pitch of prop for trawling, is tick over.

I had noticed with the bollard pull that was being conducted on the boat when I picked it up, that applying full power dropped the stern of the boat about 18 inches.

Realizing that the trawl gantry was about to hit the bridge I simply applied full power. which worked.

I was still looking aft when the first German fisherman was washed off the bank into the canal. but did see the second , and the third together with all their gear.

The wall of water that I had created continued down the canal, causing more fishermen, who I had not seen from the other side of the bridge, to run for their lives.

I am not an expert in German, but luckily for me they thought I was Swedish...

Luckily also they seemed to be very good swimmers..
