Good job this lot washed up ashore before getting itself tangled in a prop, it would take some sorting out if it had.

Thats exactly what it is and a massive bundle of it as well, although I wouldn't call it ribbon but not sure what they do actually call that stuff. suffice to say I doubt there is a rope cutter that would have dealt with that.

And once I was cycling and such a band was picked up by my back wheel, causing a complete lock-up, near crash and 5 spokes getting broken - luckily I was on the way home then.
 
Unpacking boxes bound with that tape at Harrods in the '90s, I discovered you don't need a knife to break the stuff...

...just find the join where the two flat sections are glued or 'welded' together, flip it over to find the longish loose end, and drag that back on itself. Even the girls could do it. Otherwise, it was a knife or scissors job.
