I agree. At the end of the day we are all trying to mix heat, metal and sea water together and things are bound to go wrong at some point. Usually not so dramatically! As a member of the emergency services I will never ever get mift being call to situations such as yours. You were spot on. As already mentioned thing go wrong quickly and get worse quicker so best for us all to know sooner rather than later be that 999 or whatever. Have been to one pair who set their socks on fire to attract attention! That way we can finish our tea's before turning out to you /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I appreciate your and everyone else's thoughts and comments, with the exception of Rallyveteran.
GUYS, thankyou so much. I'm glad i did the right thing and that most of you would have done something similiar.
Wasn't really sure what else to do. If it had been an engine breakdown, well that would have been different. Even i towed in a larger 25 Doral last season with rope round his prop.
The 999 call was extremely daunting i assure you, but i had no choice, i needed help. There was no way to know whether the engine would have caught fire, i could barely see it when opening the hatch, carefully of course, as the smoke was acrid and thick.
My crew and especially the 2 kids were my priority,so please rallyveteran, cut me some slack. I was nervous as hell mate,in a shipping lane and i'm not going to wait for a fire. I hope you never face this situation, because its not nice.
Thankyou Sneds, appreciate the back up. Deep down i was a wreck,i'm man enough to admit that, but i wasn't going to show it, but i hope to never go thru that ordeal again.
Thanks bud.
Si
Cheers big john.
Thankfully no water but a ton of smoke, couldn't believe how much. To a degree i'm glad the engine shut down or i'd have probably tried to carry on limping back and the fire risk would have been greater.
Thanks for agreeing, and i know something has been learned here.
Cheers mate. I know you have 2 yourself and i'm sure you've put yourself in my situation to imagine what it was like at the time. Really not nice. Hope to god you never find out. Thankyou for your kind comments T.
I did stop once, in an old 1985 Formula I had been given. Had 4 on board, called SeaStart because I had taken the decision to join them just in case. In my case (now 2.5 years ago) I just dumped the anchor down, Just off Lymington north a bit and called them. Turned out it had overheated but was also starving of fuel (my fault, put a poor quality pipe in). Nothing like you had, any sign of an urgent issue and I would call the coastguard, period.

I move away from main channel, stop and lift engine hatch to be greated by a cloud of smoke.

As you have a petrol engine, I am not sure this was the best thing to do. If you had had a real fire in the engine bay, that was being starved of oxygen, opening the hatch could have made the situation a lot worse.
I am delighted all ended well. Don't let it put you off!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
