Did anyone see on the news that Scotland's population is decreasing? Apparently a major problem from the economy, and largely due to lots of scottish types leaving, albeit then crooning about how much they miss the place - yet still not going back. I would have thought that the welcoming nature of scots would almost certainly be attractive to young people.

Missionary Work

That's because most of us are down in England still doing valuable missionary work. See you at Twickenham on the 22nd.

Perhaps too much Scotch causes fewer Scots through brewers' droop?

or dreadful english types whisk away the scottish women whilst the scots are off doing other things like fighting in the car park, shouting, or staying in the pub. Or sailing?

either way there obviously aren't enought bairns. Or, if there are, they don't stayt in scotland, they run of somewhere else. Whereas hardly anybody (cept policemen) seems to want to run away to scotland.

or other things like.....

Er....we're still working on this one but you will be surprised (maybe) by
the number of things Scots people have invented or started. Here's a few for
starters :
* Tarmac road surface (John Macadam)
* The Telephone (Alexander Graham Bell)
* Televison (John Logie Baird)
* Penicillin (Alexander Fleming)
* The US Navy (John Paul Jones)
* Pneumatic Tyres (Robert Thompson)
* The Fountain Pen (Robert Thompson)
* The Mackintosh Raincoat (Charles Mackintosh)
* Self adhesive stamps (John Chalmers)
* The Bicycle (Kirkpatrick MacMillan)
* Chloroform - the anaesthetic (James Young Simpson)
* Marmalade (Mrs ???? - no her name was not Mrs Marmalade)
* The San Francisco Streetcar System
* The Steam Engine (James Watt) - it was actually the separate
condenser he developed but who's counting
* The Australian National Anthem
* The Bank of England (William Paterson)
* The Breech Loading rifle (Patrick Ferguson)
* The Rideau Canal - Ottawa, Canada (Colonel John By)
* English Rugby Defeats - (Gavin Hastings )
* Fried Mars Bars - (My cousin Joyce)
* Modern Dentistry - (Phil McCavity)

Two reasons:

1. Diplomatic missions - In all the bars in all the world there is at least one scotsman telling anyone in earshot what a wonderful place Scotland is - Takes a lot of people that, especially when you consider that his mate is outside fighting with someone who didn't agree!

2. Trade missions - No matter what anyone else has done, a scotsman did it either first, better, bigger, smaller, higher, deeper, shorter, longer, fatter, thinner or any other measurement that you care to think of - Takes even more people, especially when you consider that his mate is outside fighting with someone who didn't agree that it was first, better, bigger etc ;-)

Re: or other things like.....

I know Scotsmen are v intelligent and don't mind being lectured about it at all, but I think telling us a Jock invented San Francisco street-cars is about the most left field piece of information I ever expect to receive from a sailing bulletin board. Keep it up.

Re: or not

"Chloroform - the anaesthetic (James Young Simpson)"

He didn't invent it, he championed its use. It's invention is generally attributed to Horace Wells, an American dentist.

Pedantically yours,

Too many Scots?

In my travels around the world I have always been left with the impression there are Scots EVERYWHERE! You can't escape them, larger than life. I guess there just aren't enough left at home. Pity that, it might help.
