Enquired about launching boat[Sealine 218 and Falcon 23]and storage for trailers and cars for week in Solent area recently.
Hythe marina..free slipway and £8 per week for trailer, with latter in CCTV range.Car free in public car park.
Mercury Yacht haven £6.50 slip each way, free car and trailer storage.
I could not believe reasonable price considering big marinas in prime spots.
Of course there could be a good reason that one of you may let me know why it is so cheap !!!

Which slipway at Hythe is it? The one directly into Southampton Water is a bit dodgy for a big boat even with four wheel Drive. ( it runs directly onto the foreshore and isnt very long)

At Mercury the slip has very tight access and with a boat your size launching would only be at high water. When we were there it was also very silted up.

Its a couple of years since I was there and ended up launching at Hamble point- and yes it was expensive. The slip here is excellent but even so due to a combination of high winds and strong tidal flow I had to have the boat lifted out.

While on our travels we looked at every slip we came accross and came to conclusion that Northney Marina suited big trail boats better than most but I have no idea of cost.

The biggest problem we come accross is that most people have no concept of how "big" a large trail boat is out of the water. You make phone calls about slips, trailer parking, access etc. You carefully explain the size of the boat, they say no problem but when you turn up the look on peoples faces says everything!! This happened to us twice when trying to launch on the Thames and once on an MBM trailboat rally. We were cheerfully told to drive down a narrow track to the slipway "plenty of room to turn around" was the cry "all the locals manage" - they did with 16ft dories not 28ft sportscruisers !!

hope this helps.

IMHO go to Mercury, better Marina, more night life, nice club/pub Hamble very nice, also Hythe has Yob culture at night, cars racing around till gone midnight, and the security man is well past pensioning age so the car may not be looked after, we had 2/3 years there before moving on, centre of Marina is ok but not much going on.

The Hythe slip is very long and slippery, I would hesitate to use it even with massive 4wd.

There are good slips also at Beaulieu and Lymington. Cant remeebrr price, but only a few quid and nearby parking is easyish

It's the one in Hythe Marina Village but reading the other posts it has put me off of it a bit.
Read on forum before about someone who used slipway near moody boat yard and put trailer in Moody yard locked compound.Any experience on this?

Other side of the road to Moody's, Sealine have nice slip ( did anyway ), as your launching a 218 you could give them a bell.

You could always put the boat into Milford Haven - two excellent slips I've used both and cheap...... 23ft Holiday

Cleopatra - yellow hull called Court Jester. Have you seen her ?

The slip your talking about is at Swanwick. If you go to www.boatlaunch.co.uk and use the clickable map, it will give description and all the other info. I've used that slip and you can launch most states of the tide apart from LWS. Moodys is just up the road, about a five min walk. Or you can take the boat up to the yard and collect the driver that way. There is a petrol station at the top of the road that leads to the slip. Becareful when launching as of to the sides its got a few rocks just under surface, but if you stay within the stakes to the main fairway you should be ok.
I'm off down there the bank hol for the RYA do on the IOW. Moodys charged me £15 for the car and trailer. Probably tha same sort of size that you've got. I'll dig out the number, or ists on the web site as above.

Wha'dya mean "I'm always playing with this engine" its the only way to get it to run!
