My daughter & I visited Gypsy Moth IV yesterday. Her first reaction was " it smells like a proper yacht, not like the plastic ones". By that I suppose she meant diesel, parafin, & mildew.
She said it reminded her of childhood holidays on our old wooden boat. Strange how a smell can quickly bring back old memories.

I once thought that someone should market an aerosol that smelled of Stockholm Tar and rum etc and call it "Old Gaffer".

We met a nice family on the Yealm this summer-what summer?-who were on a lovely Hillyard from the fifties. When invited aboard First Mate and I both exclaimed"wow-smells like a proper boat!" We both have a soft spot for classics and have owned wooden boats in the past, so we know exactly what you mean.

The smell of salty dampness mixed with matches and gas when lighting the stove always reminds me of childhood sailing holidays, with a barely detectable but ever-present smell of GRP in the background. :)

We never had a wooden boat, so they just smell mouldy to me - and I have difficulty accepting that the bilges will never be completely dry. ;)

Back in the late 50s, my dad took us all on an Easter holiday to the Fens onboard a hired motor cruiser.

The smell of petrol fumes as we lay in our bunks back then will always stay with me and today brings back evocative memories of that wonderful holiday.

Like many in those days my dad liked his John Players and, in hindsight, I'm bl**dy surprised we didn't go boom. :p

Giving up smoking is a good way to rekindle past memories.

I remember walking the dog along the Chelmer and was overcome by many unknown nature smells that were a delight. At the same time, I arranged a loan for my first boat which equalled my annual tobacco outlay. Never looked back.

Head down the Portugese/Spanish coast until the Easterlies start.
You get (kind of suddenly,) the aromas of what's ashore there, and think that the guys who 'did' Trafalgar and all that, could possibly navigate by nose, and then - Africa appears, and you check the chart , just to be sure.

Memorable - - - - Bet your life.

Of course the boat just smelt of chaps and salty clothes.

Try a Submarine!

A classic!

It’s been commented on numerous occasions.

A mixture of many things…. some of which you just don’t want to know about.

But I just wish I had a bottle for a “quick-fix” of times past.

Also in 83 I remember the sweet sickly smell off the coast of South Carolina, as we were heading towards Charleston Naval Base.
