Greetings,

Further to the "Wintering in Norway" thread, a quick question....

As a non-EU registered yacht, we understand we can spend up to 18 months in the EU before we are deemed to have imported Hinewai and are therefore up for VAT.

So our plan is to come up to the UK this year and winter the boat somewhere on the East Coast (many thanks for the suggestions in our previous thread), then spend Summer 2011 sailing Northern Europe and the Baltic (although probably without Bob).

We THOUGHT that since Norway is not part of the EU, spending some time there will allow us to restart the 18 month clock when we re-entered the EU.

Hmmm, is this the case? If not, a bit of a rethink's needed.

Many thanks

Peter & Jean

As Norway is not an EU member, your 18mths should start again at the first EU country you go to after being out of the EU. Have you looked at the detail on this subject on www.noonsite.com? There are specific quotes of the regulations and responses by EU to questions.

We cruised in the Med for 5 seasons in our AUS flagged yacht and used Turkey and Tunisia as our non-EU countries to visit to reset the 18mth counter. We had no problems, but neither were we ever asked about VAT payment or even the duration we had been in any EU country during that time. Maybe we were lucky but we did not try to go over the 18mths as it was not difficult to comply with the need to leave and return.

Hi Hinewaisman,
I would not let the things you have been reading put you off coming to Norway. We have wonderful sailing here. And yes by coming to Norway you would be leaving the EU and then return with your full new 18 months.
I hope you can come and have a 'cold one' in Ålesund.

Many thanks

Hi Viking,

Thanks for that - it was what I thought, but then learned Norway was part of Schengen so thought it was possible the Vat umbrella covered there as well.

But appartently not - nice for once to still be able to use Plan A.

The first beer's on me

Peter

I'll second that. Norway is a beautiful country with VERY friendly people (added bonus is that they speak better English than most Brits !).
I haven't managed to sail there yet (soon though) but have spent quite some time working over there and I love the place.

There are also restrictions on how long you can keep your yacht in Norway, so you need to research that as well.

Give me a shout if you are in my area.

Pm me if you need any technical help. Being the only Brit engineer in town I usually get to meet all the vistors when their boats give trouble.
I have worked in the marine business here for 14 yrs so have all the relevant contacts if needed.
