At just under £700 for a 12" touch screen display with pre-loaded C map charts this looks to be incredible value. What is the downside-there has to be one at this price?

Cactus Navigation on e bay - the kit does not seem to contain a GPS aerial but I cannot see any other bits that are needed? My problem is that I know nothing about Northstar, was there not a problem with their LCD screens or am I thinking of Navico?

Cactus are a good company and will try and match any price. They are worth a call via there website to see if they are dropping prices further for the boat show - they were not sure last time I called (think they wait for Garmin to announce further special boat show price drops!). I'm after a Garmin but that looks a good deal :D

You don't need to go to the Boat Show of course to get the deal...

Yes, the c-map charts are in the database, but if you read through the description, you will have to obtain a licence key to unlock them. Can't see that being included in the price so I suggest you give Cactus Nav a call and find out how much that would be.

The touch screen isn't a conventional type, but uses a grid of infrared beams which are interrupted by the finger. Don't know whether that might work as well as conventional touch screens.

The 8000i was introduced in 2006 and is now discontinued. I don't think it ever sold in great numbers. It's supposedly quite well made, according to reviews, so might be OK.

Very few plotters use the MAX Pro cartography, so it might be worth asking Jeppesen whether they have any plans to discontinue support for it.
