We are going to be in Santander at the end of the RSYC race come the middle of July. Although we will not be spending that long down there we certainly could make time for the right attraction! Does anyone have any first hand knowledge of any particularly nice spots to drop in on, not too far from Santander, before we go back up to N Brittamy and home. All input v. welcome.

Spent a little time along the stretch between Santander and Finisterre but it was about ten years ago. The very first thing that we noticed then and, it would seem by the lack of responses is still the case, was how few other cruising boats we met. I do not have the log to hand so names of places are long gone from memory but we were made very welcome in several little ports that had benefitted from EEC largess and the scenery was very pleasant. If you have time carry on around the corner to the Rias and jump from there back to Brittany. Ex RSYC member!

When we did the N Spanish coast, we covered the area from Gijon to the French border. Personally, I thought the best little ports were to the East of Santander, which itself is not a very attractive place. So my recommendation would be to sail East toward Bilbao setting off back to the UK from there.

Note: some of the small ports on the N coast are inaccessible when the Atlantic swell is high, and some of them dry. Take an up to date pilot book.

I did the stretch Bilbao to Santander a few years ago. We really loved Castro Urdiales, but it's not very good in a strong N'easterly. It's one place I would go back to if I visited that stretch again. Santona not very interesting.
