I need to have some rotten stitching on my sprayhood repaired and some work on the genoa.

Hitherto, I have always used companies on the south coast, near where I keep my boat, however I live in the north east of England and wonder if anybody can recommend a sailmaker within say 50 miles of York that they have used and can recommend?

Perhaps not quite as close as you would like but Goacher Sails www.goachersails.co.uk/ at Windermere did an excellent job for me on a Bimini at a very reasonable cost.

I used Goacher once - Never again
I needed a solicitor to get my money back on a cruising chute wrongly made & a genoa bought at the same time does not set correctly
All this in spite of the boat being made available at Windemere for measuring

Yes - but he just needs some sewing done - invariably you'll find someone in the tent-hire business who will do an effective job @ about 20% that of a sailmaker. I'm sure there are plenty of those in the Tyne-Tees area (and they probably need the trade more than those in the Lake District or the S Coast.

I used him to repair a canopy and put a new sacrificial strip on a genoa. said he couldnt quote as it depended on how long it took and he wouldnt know that until he got it back to the loft. I asked what was the most it could be and he said it couldnt be more than £400 or so. Bill was £600 and he denied ever saying what he said. He could have called me when he got it back to the loft, but he chose to do the job and lie. Even if I give him the benefit of the doubt, he merely might have forgotten - which would still have been bad.

The work was good IIRC, but I wont be using them again, and will be warning anyone if I get the chance.

NO1 SAILS Linconshire brillant dingy man thats now moved into bigger premises does sails covers all sorts of things and will take time to talk to you about your needs

I've not had sail work done there, but the guys at Storrar Marine in Newcastle have a good reputation at my club. It's a small place, and they are always helpful and friendly when I stop in.

Did in my last boat + genoa strip + main luff rope... Super service

Try North West sails based in Keighley. I have seen some of their work on boats in Stranraer marina, he also adjusted a sail for a friend and did a good job.
