North West England Recommendations

These are all really helpful, as we've been based in the Bristol Channel for the last few years the tide in Solway doesn't seem so bad... Think we'll be looking at Maryport and Whitehaven in the first instance, we can always move further north later.
I've just been told that they have started to dredge Fleetwood again so you may like to reconsider this as its the nearest to Kendal. Interesting that no one has mentioned the only 24 hr access port on the NW English coast - it doesn't have a marina, just swinging moorings, which have no annual fees!

Between Barrow and Walney Island?

If you mean Roa Island, then it is an hour plus from Kendal and although a boat on a mooring will remain afloat, the area around the boat club dries.

I was based in Maryport, it's really friendly and has the best berthholders lounge I have ever seen, brand new. I had a small slow boat and a bigger boat there, noticeably cheaper than whitehaven. If you want to do day sails, then the cumbrian coast isnt great, but if you tend to go for trips, its fine. Kippford across the solway is a nice wee trip, as is kircudbright, and the isle of man ports. Ireland is a hop and a skip. The tides are strong.

Where's that? Please tell me more!

Very impressed at the speed you did this. Moorings have been laid around Piel and Roa islands as well as further down the channel before the road bridge. To be honest cruising from this area (and the rest of the NW English coast)isn't great as most destinations are at least 8 hours away and there aren't any 'bolt holes' but for day sails it's great as the channel always has plenty of water. I'm obviously biased as our boats mooring is in the hole next to Head Scar!

Hi Steve,
An honest appraisal of the NW as a cruising ground.
Unless I miss my guess and not wanting to blow your cover we sailed together as first trip cadets?
