Hello

Can any of you sage North Wales chaps recommend a Garmin dealer to register newly installed AIS and fit new VHS radio. Tried Rowlands, no answer on phone and website is a dogs dinner and very slow :(

Hi Phil

Think the AIS has to be set by some chap who knows his stuff. Unique MMSI so has to be registered by appropriate and responsible person which sort of counts me well out.

I'm unclear about what you're asking. If you have a new AIS transponder then you need to upload your boat's ID info to it. You do that with usb cable, laptop, and software disc from Garmin. It's diy stuff. If you have AIS receive only unit you don't need to do anything - just switch it on. If you have a new VHF radio you need to punch in your MMSI number as per the instructions (available online), but again that is a diy job not dealer. If you need to get an MMSI number you do it online at ofcom. If you need to register for warranty you do that online as philliz said (or not bother, which is my preferred strategy). If you need a VHF radio installed you need a dealer if you prefer not to diy it

ah, got ya. Bloke who installed Navigation and AIS kit said i needed to commission AIS, i assumed (incorrectly) that was with Garmin. Anyway I have rummaged through my pile of pretty boxes and found said disc installation is imminent. As for VHF should be ok to install as NMEA 2000 appears to be fairly straight forward plug into bus.

One question - spec says do not install close to peeps due to radiation, since is installed afew feet from where I will be seated, just how much of an issue is radiant energy from a AIS 600 system?

Getting all excited as boat gets collected tomorrow after a bit of a clean up, in the water tomorrow afternoon - Yippee!

Many thanks
Roy

Ah right, now the information is coming! :D. You have an AIS600. That's a transponder - I have the same. You need to connect the Garmin box to laptop with usb cable and run the software on the disc, and enter your boat's details, then you're good to go

The unit should, if sensibly installed, also have a dashboard switch allowing you to turn off the transmit function and go into silent mode. Obviously this is a good thing to do in harbour to reduce everyone's screen clutter

I do not think there is any serious radiation risk. It transmits VHF frequency signal all day (so er not exactly ionising radiation) and Garmin are being litigation conscious, but there is no real issue to worry about. 1 metre away is fine imho

Yes the VHF just plugs into existing n2k bus. You have to enter your mmsi, a one-time-only task described in the instructions

Just got registered with ofcom and now have MMSI number so will give it a go with the laptop after foods. looking good for a first outing this weekend! Just my luck the weather will be carpe.
Get the point about harbour.
Many thanks again.
