Thinking of the cruise to Poole, I'm wondering about the effect of the recent storms; does anyone know if the North Channel - and for that matter the Needles Channel - have been affected at all ?

A friend of mine came in by the N Channel returning from Cherbourg in a stiff SW about 4 days ago near LW (didnt fancy the Needles channel itself). He draws something like 2.1m so I'm guessing you'd be fine but no idea whether the Shingles have moved around though.

Over the last two or three years the Shingles Bank has got much closer to the buoys. Whether this is because the buoys have been moved or the shingle moved, who knows but after the storms of this year I suspect a lot of banks on the south and west coasts have moved enormously.

Look forward to the forum keeping us all updates so we can learn the easy way!

Although NtMs might be more reliable!

Its 6 weeks since I was that way but it was fine with 2m... Interestingly the visible shingle was further out off Alum Bay not in further east opposite Totland.

Enough water goes through those passages they are not going to silty up over a winter...

The North Channel has, as far as I can tell, unaffected by the storms. I went through it a month ago and the soundings seemed the same. Also cut around the area of the green bouy the marks the channel and there area there is unchanged.

The same is not true of The Needles Channel where we now have quite a large island where once there were banks. As others have said peeps are shifting the nav bouys.

Have the banks on the Isle of Wight closed? Surely the financial crisis hasn't been that bad?
