North Africa, anybody ever cursed in Morocco or Algeria…………………………

Thinking off crossing over from Spain, to north Africa this summer and was wondering if anyone had any experiences of Morocco or Algeria, ………………………., good or bad.

Never cursed in Algeria, but spent a dismal holiday in Morocco and cursed about everything...the weather, the lack of somewhere to get a drink ,the dirt and the place in general. I was in a cursing mood.

Apart from the unfortunate misspelling (do people ever read their postings).

Yes I've spent some time in Tunisia - very cheap, especially diesel - friendly folk, but immense bureaucracy only tempered by judicious baksheesh - excellent local wine and food - Arabic difficult to understand for one whose learnt it in Egypt, but French spoken by most. Weather OK.
Most tourists confined to upmarket ghettos, considerable poverty and expectation of alms.
An interesting but not terribly attractive stay.

Like all the Maghreb, lots of well-educated, Westernised youngsters, with dire economic prospects.

I bounced off Morocco this year on my way south. Stopped at Essouiria(?). Very welcoming, harbour a bit pricey for one night, food very cheap and alcoholic drink widely available. All in all an interesting place and worth visiting. Wished I'd spent more time there than in the dreary Canaries.
I strongly recommend Imray's new 'North Africa Pilot'.

Algeria might require a read of the FOs updates on safety. I haven't read about any problems recently, but there were a lot, and maybe just not reported at the moment.

We spent some time in Morocco and loved it. The people were very friendly and you should venture inland for a few days - well worth it. Yes it was poor, dirty, even rundown in some places sand the paperwork was endless. The friendly and welcoming nature of everyone we met made it very worthwhile.

I one harbour our boat became a local attraction with locals coming down to take a look. When it got too busy the harbour master gave us a guard to keep them away.

I have often thought we should have spent more time there.

N Africa - Enjoyed

Started with Ceuta (Spanish Morocco) - typical Spanish city. Then 10 miles away Marina Smir - what a contrast! Yes Alcohol available in M Smir. A bit out of the way, cab into M'Diq (yes!). Marina was good, people lovely.

We passed Algeria - 35 miles off per advice. It's still a dodgy place I believe. Tunisia was great, but the haul past Algeria is a long one unless you leg up to the Balearics.

We did this in late 2010 before Tunisia trouble. Would go back to all places (except perhaps Sid Bou Said/Tunis now we've done Carthage - worth a visit) and for Algeria if things improved.

Go for it!
