Advice please?!

We’re planning our boating for this summer (I’m sure we’ll have one this year!) – looking at somewhere on or about the Cherbourg Peninsula

All tides access would be useful, any local knowledge / recommendations gratefully received (Cherbourg itself would be grand, but had some security issues there last year. Anyone know if their situation has been improved?)

- Thanks

Apart from Cherbourg all the harbours are tidal with the marinas (if there is one) behind sills. Buy yourself a Pilot book for the area which will have all the details of access times, usually expressed in terms of hours +/- local HW. Much of this is also available on line from the harbours1 websites, as are tide tables to help your planning.

Alderney has all tide access to mooring buoys. Dielette has some access to waiting pontoons, depending on your draft.

Thanks - Alderney would be good, but the public transport links aren't so easy. (Have to leave the boat and travel back to England regularly).
Perhaps Carteret might fit the bill - I'll continue pondering!

Tidal is OK - I'm just trying to work out the usual compromise between convenience, scenery, user-friendliness - you know the conundrum!

I assume you are talking about moving it to Normandy for the summer and bringing it back at the end and then doing many short or longer periods aboard with some cruising ?

Why not make a move each time say :

1/ Start in cherbourg and get the ferry home

2/ Bring car to Cherbourg Alderney, Dielette and leave it in Carteret

3/ Carteret, Guernsey, Jersey and Granville.

4/ Granville, St Malo, Dinan, St Cast

5/ St Cast, Dahouet, Binic and St Quay Portrieux.

Each time its a reasonable bus/ taxi ride back to the car and then work your way back fro cross channel return.

In Normandy Brittany you dont need to do hundreds of miles for a nice trip and a change of scenery/ restaurants.
