Non boaty friend asked for advice on taking family on boating holiday to Norfolk Broads. I haven't a clue, never been there, but said I'd consult the Oracle!

Any suggestions for location, hire companies, tips, etc etc????

There are loads of hire companies on the Broads. Do a search on the web, or PM me and I will give you a few names of the good ones and those to avoid. I prefer the northern rivers, Wroxam, Horning, Stalham. Much nicer in my opinion, but you can always go and take a look at the southern areas via Great Yarmouth.

For a real sense of the Broads as a place, your friend could do a lot worse than read the two Arthur Ransome books set on the Norfolk Broads, and in particular, Coot Club

I'm sure that things have changed a lot since the time that the books were written, but if nothing else, it will give a good sense of the geography of the Broads, and a plan for exploring them. The hazards of going through Great Yarmouth are still, I believe, very much as Ransome describes them in the book, although his heroes go through, a la Thirdman, without an engine.

Northern rivers are very nice but so too are the southern rivers, particulalry the Waveney.
Best advice is get the Blakes & Hoseasons brochures and pick a boat they like the look of - some firms boats look a bit grotty but some are excellent. Latest boats cost a lot bet are pretty nice and filled with gadgets (DVD, Playstations etc).

As far as location goes then a fortnight is ample to cover both the northern and southern rivers so start point not so important. If a week is all they are going for suggest start on the nortern rivers and if they can get past Gt Yarmouth do the Waveney as opposed to the Yare.

Tides at Gt. Yarmouth can be an issue in a hire boat but if they follow the guidelines they will be fine.

I am moored at Stalham and I agree with the others that the north is far nicer although it is quite nice up towards Norwich but if he hasn't been before then he'll enjoy any of it really. Herbert Woods are a very nice company to deal with and also Richardsons at Stalham. My brother and his girlfriend once hired a boat with Kingfisher cruisers at Thorpe and someone there spoke to her like crap which is a bit off when your giving them a thousand quid for a weeks boat hire.
Aston boats at Beccles are also very nice people.

Twenty five hols on the Norfolk Broads ,b but a while ago now. I always used Blakes, cant remember why now. Yep, probably the north is best, but we used to carear round the whole lot in a week. Yarmouth is excelent fun. If you time it right, you can shoot the rapids, then bash into the bridge at the bottom, collecting all the bits of wood before mooring at the yacht station among another hundred or so hire boats. Stopping off at the many pubs up north is best though. Go last week in July I think and follow the Water Rats jas group about from pub to pub. Take some kids and a dinghy, even more fun.../forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

He's flying in with girlfiriend to take his kids on holiday for a week (separated from ex). Think probably in Aug, so no Water Rats, but can have fun with kids and dinghy!!.....do hire companies provide dinghy, or can u hire as optional extra?

He used to sail, so boat handling abilities latent but there, so should have fun shooting rapids and collecting wood! /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Same genereration as me, so he bleedin well should have read Arthur Ransome, but would be good reading for the kids in preparation.

I'm a bit of a AR fan, and can't understand why they are not essential reading in school instead of all that Shakespeare crap! <running for shelter>

Just realised. Your new ditchcrawling tendencies are not new at all, but the culmination of years of experience....all those tales of blue water trips were just a cover for your true inclinations! /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

You used to be able to hire a dinghy with the boat, sailing or otherwise.

Think I learned my boat reversing skills on the NB. Used to go up every available little creek, then have to back all the way down. Now getting quite used to backing the barge qiite a long way. It's stopping the bugger thats still got me beat../forums/images/icons/smile.gif
