The 2020 race was inevitably cancelled due to Covid, but the 2021 race is going to be on Sat 19th June. Full details and how to enter can be found here: www.benfleetyachtclub.org/boating/nore-race-1

"The Nore Race is a combined 'open' cruiser and dinghy race held each year covering a 20 mile circuit of the Thames Estuary, starting and finishing at Southend Pier. Benfleet Yacht Club have been organising this event since the 1930's (although likely to have taken a break during the war years). For many competitors, the Nore Race is the only race that they will compete in: which they treat more like a rally, rather than a full on race until the starting gun fires."

Apparently it was Edward Heath's favourite race in his yacht Morning Cloud; I have crewed in the Nore race and it was great fun, we did unexpectedly well and I did wonder about the handicapping, but it was a great day out.

I raced my cat in days of yore in the Nore Race. Second or third over the line one year in just under two hours. Had to sit on a bit of sand west of the pier for some time before we could get back to TBYC to get the boats out!

This is still the case for the faster cruisers and dinghies. Most people take it as an opportunity to socialise. Personally, I take it as an opportunity for a bit of kip.
