Does anyone have any knowledge of this type of Yacht. It seems to be comparitively little known in the UK but more popular on the continent. I am looking for an easy to sail, comfortable small cruiser, and was rather taken by one that is in my price range. So would be very interseted in the opinions of anyon who knows this yacht type.

There is probably only of these on the market in the UK at present. If so I briefly checked it over while looking at other yachts in Southampton last week-end.

From 10 meters away I could tell this was no the boat for me, the hull shape is barge like and not what you might be expecting from the side plan view on the Kings web site.

The upper sides of the wheel house are wooden and look like a d.i.y. replacement. Once in the main cabin a 6 footer will find the roof way way short of standing headroom.

Be careful with this design you would not be able to sell it on quickly.

At about 50% of the asking price it might be an interesting proposition for someone who wants to motor-sail in sheltered waters. If you are thinking Steadfast, Colvic Watson or Fisher, then the Nordic is not a cheap cousin it was designed for a different purpose.

Sound advice I think. I did go and have a look myself and your comments confirmed what I had thought, and bought me to a decision. Probably a good boat for nipping up creeks and rivers but I don't think I would want my kids on it in the Solent, let alone further afield. Not at all what you would expect from the line drawings

The condition also left a little to be desired.

Thank you for your help

Enthusiastic Nordic 81 owner says...

Since I first was aboard a NORDIC 81, [owned by a Danish teacher from Vordingborg, DK in Sisimiut, Greenland in 1993] I knew this was the boat for me. "Small Boat through Sweden", part of an excellent series on inland waterways by Roger Pilkington, has been my bible since 1962. Since 2002 <THAÏS> [see pix under nordic81 on Flickr.com] has been based in Helsingør, DK and underway on open and coastal waters - what she was designed for in Finland - on the Kattegat, Skaggerak and the Baltic. Her graceful hull lines are those of a classic Scandinavian 'double-ended' fishing boat. Her freeboard is low. Older guest find her easy to board. Her stern lifts her over following seas. Only once in now 10 years has she ever had water at her rail! Interiors have large multi-functional 185 cm 'after cabin' - a feature that immediately captured my Architect's eye. My Nordic 81 has proven an ideal summer home and office for passages to Norway's Telemark Canal, the Swedish west and east coast Archipelagoes, Dalsland and Göta Canals... and Åland and east to her birth place Borgö east of Helsinki. What more can one ask of a faithful friend?

Hi, I have recently Bought one of these and I am in the process of doing some repairs. Do you happen to know what size the seals are on the windows in the top cabin. Thanks
