My wife once commented that she could imagine selling up to buy one of those when the kids are grown up - maybe I have a chance after all!!!! All praise Nordhavn I say!

Perhaps not Cape Horn, but definitely the Med and the Caribbean /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Thanks OceanFroggie.

Your avatar Jason looks like one of Angus's Haines 31s in the old harbour ar Garrykennedy? Shannon Castle Line are one of the best hire operators on the Shannon.

and you have to remember that Egret started off on the other side of the pond coming over to GIB with the NAR

An amazing voyage for sure, and very well documented - but there have also been many similar voyages made by sailboats, often considerably smaller and more basically equipped, voyages made without fanfare or fuss.......

This is not offered as a criticism, simply a comment - I am a keen admirer of Nordhavn - I think they are wonderful vessels - but even for a very fuel efficient vessel like this 47 I would hate to have to pay the fuel bill for the voyage illustrated.....

This note is partially prompted by thought of a friend who is planning a similar (re route) voyage soon, but singlehanded and under sail - however I think his plan is to swing right at the Marquesas and go up to Alaska, then cruise down the west coast to Panama, across the Carib, and back to England.
On a 'little' trimaran.
I think I would prefer to be on a Nordhavn going around the Horn...... /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

good point and you are right as to fuel costs, having read up on a number of these voyages some of the ex sailors had converted to power on the basis that they were fed up at living life at 18 degrees of heel.

not knocking the sailing used to be one but these days I cant afford to take two or three days to go to Rothesay and back.

I do miss the lack of noise however........ ah

Sure sail yachts do these sort of trips quite frequently - nothing new in that. But what makes this usual is that it was done on a long range single engine motor boat. I'd rather be in the safety of a sail yacht in rough seas any day compared to a rolling mobo, especially round the cape. But as the man says, wait for the weather window (which racing yachts never do) and it is doable. Add to that the live aboard comfort of a Nordhavn and it's value for money compared to bloated plastic speed boats so common on the med and you can see how amazing such a trip would be for a retired couple.

It's horses for courses, some folk like fast day boating and short dashes on sports boats, while others like cruising where boats like the Nordhavn are king.

Spot on.

We looked at a number of the boats on the Shannon and I (we) picked that boat as the best of the bunch. And the closest to us in Cork.

A great Holiday which undid all the bad press a trip with a Pregnant wife on a 26ft sailing yacht From Cork to Baltimore and back generated!

Once I copped which way she prop-walked she was a doddle to handle (the Haines)anywhere and she was bright and airy down below (and I was easily able to fence off various areas to protect the curious 18 month old Daughter).

Ultimatly it led to the purchase of our current boat with SWMBO pushing for it!

We thought about one of the New boats that Silver line had last year (all round guardrails unlike most of the Hire operators), but then we bought our own little ship and moved house so Holidays are off limits for a while now.

Yes, I was about to make comment on the fact that many sailors do this without any ceremony. You have to admit that it is unusual for a MoBo though. I too admire the Nordhavn and would love to own one. I think in reality though, I will probably convert to sail for long distance cruising in the future.
