Mine, once waterproof, appear to be no longer so.
Are there any easy remedies, apart from paying much dosh for a new set?

Camping shops (and swindleries) will sell you a spray-on that re-proofs. There are also some that you bung in the washing machine. One reason for breathables becoming non-waterproof is a clogging of the pores, with salt and gunge, which wicks the water through. Washing and re-proofing can restore, but in my experience it's not as good as the original. Or you can go for the copper bottom soultions, NikWax or wax cotton re-proofing, available from camping, horsey and motorbiking shops. I use NikWax on my bike jacket and boots, and it's great for about half a year. Don't expect it to be breathable afterwards though.

There are products, though I doubt you'll ever get them back to completely waterproof - water repellant should be acheivable, though. A camping/hiking type shop is probably your best bet.

Henri Lloyd do a wash and a water proofer for your wet weather gear for about a fiver. The water proofer is activated by heat in a tumble dryer.

My Musto & Hyde (that shows how old they were!) oily bottoms wore right through on the seat and much water wicked up through my jeans.

I sent them back to what by then was Mustos and they grafted a new seat in in the latest stuff for £20! I was greatly impressed.

Some years ago I went to a talk by Mr Musto himself (at GXSA) where he explained that sea-going oilies shouldn't be breathable because you shouldn't sit down in breathables (except perhaps in a dry pub half-way through a fell walk). In particular you shouldn't expect anything to be breathable in salty water. Musto's as well as everyone else now sell breathable sea-going stuff - has the technology advanced or is it just "market forces"?

Since I don't seem to do long passages as much these days I've gone over to a fresh set of cheapies from Tyke sports for about £25 each year and use last year's for antifouling, creosoting the fence etc. Works a treat

Agree Dave, Nickwax is especially good for leather and waxed cotton.
The lads in the motorcycle club used to rib me for wearing my old Barbour jacket when they all had the new fangled breathable stuff. However, I was frequently the only really dry one after a wet run. I remember a certain amount of hilarity checking this out.
I still find it convenient to wear a waxed waistcoat for boating and golf as it allows plenty of movement, this can be supplemented with a jacket over the top as necessary.

Arrrr! them were the days.
