Spiffy varnish inside my boat but this lay-up I need to do the cabin floor and a skating rink is the last thing I need. Does mat varnish provide any grip or is it just as slippery? Any ideas for a nice varnish-like finish that isn't dangerous when wet?

I would have thought that anything varnish-like would be slippy.
You could try Treadmaster, cork tiles or kitchen vinolay.
Carpet works well for me.

Varnol applied for a matt finish works well for us. It is apparently often used for wood floors, gives an ''oiled wood" glow, and is fairly non-slip. If things get really wet/bumpy/muddy, we throw down some of those carpet door mats with the rubber backing. Very non-slip, and easy to clean, dry and store.

I don't have huge amounts of wood on my Snapdragon, but I'm in the process of re-doing most of it in le Tonkinois. It's non-slip, even when wet and seems to be wearing well on the stairs of my house in spite of a horde of teenagers (actually 3 most of the time, it only seems like 30!).

I have carpet down. Only some surplus from I don't know where. Intend to throw it out and replace but has lasted 3 seasons so far and still looks OK. It is red so dosn't show dirt or stains much.

NO hard surface floor finish is non-skid when wet, there are a few very specialist floor finishes that invole two or three coats of clear epoxy with a mica mixed in, that are used in areas where non skid is a requirment but I would not think suitable for a cabin floor.

Personally, to retain the ambiance and feel of your cabin, I would use a high quality wood cleaner/sanding, to get out all the old dirt polish etc, & finish with at least 2 coats of a matt varnish Sikkins, Blakes.
When its wet and slippery put down some non slip carpet or altro see:http://www.flooringsupplies.co.uk or similar.

So you retain the carachter of your boat and on the odd occasions when it gets a bit wet put down a floor cover.

We 'managed' for years with a polished floor, until one time on a particularly wet beat with the tide, the floor was like a skating rink. Both of us fell in the boat when working at the chart table. I put a few strips of self-adhesive non-slip tape along the line of the boards, doesn't exactly enhance the appearance but is acceptable and has completely overcome any slippiness when really wet.

Micro-pore wood 'paint' ........ remove varnish and two medium coats ..... not so it builds a skin like some people seem to do !!!

It sinks in, is easily maintained by a quick sand back and recoat. It seals the wood enough to stop ingraining 'crap' etc., but lets the wood breathe.

The benefit for you - apart from the aesy maintenace - is the matt finish.

Oh yes - B&Q is as good as any !!

Previous and now ..

Previous boats used heavy duty Bathroom Rubber backed carpet cut to shape. Worked very well and stayed reasonably well.

Present boat has heavy duty hessian carpet that is relatively stiff and cut exactly to floor ....... it has never slipped in the 6 yrs .... in good and bad weather !!
