My much better half has just plugged our new DAB radio into the wrong mains unit.

The first I knew of if it was a loud 'pop' sound, followed by a scream.

The correct unit is 5V 1A: the one it was blasted with is 12V 3A.

The display still works, but there's no sound.

She says she's going to get it fixed.

Is that likely to be viable (when it only cost 30 GBP)?

Unless she's very good with a soldering iron then it definitely won't be viable! :ambivalence:

But do tell me .... are you putting 12V through a standard USB port and, if so, why would you want to do that? The eventual result seems inevitable.

Does it have any line audio out....

My thoughts are:
If the display works and it appears to be doing DAB radio things then its just the audio power am chip thats bust.
These are cheap and easy to replace.
But! as Richard says if you dont DIY, its going to cost more than a new radio.

Thank you, Richard and Dougal, for confirming my fears.

Richard ...... no usb port was involved in this vandalism. She plugged the wrong mains adaptor into shore power.

Ahhh I see. The wrong transformer but one with the same size plug on the low voltage side. When you want to find a transformer with a specific size plug on it, you never can!

I can't see any way to avoid that problem other than a Big Red Sticker on the DAB transformer which says "DAB Radio" on it. ;)

Actually, that's not going to work either! What you need is a BRS on the 12V transformer with "Not DAB Radio" on it. :o

You got it Richard.

It's a rainy day ...... we'll make some masking tape labels for the numerous transformers.

Many of the older ones were.
I have one which takes in 12V and also charges its AA batteries. It's Roberts and about ten years old?
Same socket as rechargeable spotlight, ancient cordless drill which charges from 12V and icom VHF h/h charging base.

I use a white paint pen to associate each charger with its gadget. Had to do it with all the kid's stuff, so do my own too.

And to prove my complete surrender to OCD, when the gadget dies I then mark the charger with its Volts and Amps in big letters that I can easily read and chuck it into an enormous box of its fellows for easier raiding later.
