We are having problems at home with our Sony digital tv, especially on chnnel 4 the picture keeps breaking up into squares, Pixels?, then can be ok for a few minutes, so on so forth.
Also we only get a few channels, where,as I would have expected we would get all the free view ones,it been a digital telly.
My mrs is doing my head in about it, so can anyone who knows anything about them give any advice.
Sorry its not a boaty queastion.

You need to go into the Freeview website, enter your postcode and see if digital TV is available in your area. If not then you're stuck with analogue TV unless you have cable or Sky.

Thanks guys, we do have it in the area as my next door neighbour has freeview.
Must admit the ariel is in our attic, but the problem of the pic breaking up on a regular basis has only started in the last few days and not on all channels, but especially channel4.
When we got the tv about two yrs ago we were able to get loads of channels, but now can only get aprox 5-6.
Must admit I never watch telly unless it is something interesting, but it keeps the missus quiet, : /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Cheers.

The cheap quick solution is to put a signal amplifier in. About £8, plug your aerial into the input side, plug the box into the mains, and then plug the TV into the output. A lot cheaper than a new aerial.

A TV is only as good as the signal that you put into it. If you have a rubbish signal/ aerial you will get a rubbish picture. If the aerial is 20 years old and the coax is full of rain water don’t expect a good picture. It amazes me that people pay up to £2000 for a TV but won’t pay £50 for an aerial to put a decent signal into it. I am a radio ham and had a knock on the door the other day from a neighbour complaining that I was interfering with their TV when they had left I looked at their TV aerial it was pointing at their drive till the wind blew then it was pointing up at 45 deg angel. A week later a new aerial was erected and all were happy. Signal amplifier amplify everything including the rubbish you do not wont, a good aerial is much better solution.

I found when I bought a flat screen tee vee that I had to point the anttenna at a different transmitter to the one I had previously used for analogue. I also got a new antenna which is actually mountred in the attic.

Not only must the antenna be pointing in the right direction but must also be set with the small elements either vertical or horizontally to give best picture.

I only had a choice of two transmitters so it took no time at all to mount and set up.

I would suggest to avoid amplifiers unless no other option as they amplify the wanted and unwanted.

Well, ours did, but then we're in a reception blackspot so any boost in strength was (and is) a bonus, 'cos we couldn't even get terrestrial analogue without it! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Have you retuned your receiver recently? We found Film4 went missing, then daughter informed us that they change the transmissions from time to time. Doh!

Avoid amplifiers; they dont work.

Absolute b0110x... Analogue or digital in our house is unusable without an amp. We use an individual one per outlet and they certainly do work.

Hi all, and thanks for all the good advice which I followed.
Problem with picture breaking up into sections of pixel groups was caused by the ariel connection where it plugs into back of telly, just gave it a turn to renew good contact and bingo.
Then retuned to get mast all the freeview channels.
Thanks to you all again, C_W
