Hello Folks,

SWIMBO's laptop has a problem. When you put in a website address it treats it like a search bar and brings up a list of suggestions of websites. Then when you click on one of them it says unable to display page!

www.bbc.co.uk works fine and it goes straight to the site, but all the others we try don't work. It's Vista on an Acer.

Has anyone an idea what this problem is caused by,

thanks for any tips,

Andy

What browser are you using???

Maybe try downloading a entirely new browser.. such as Google Chrome.. (Which I am enjoying) or firefox....... and then seeing how that behaves...

Could be some Malware..... you might want to do a scan with MalWare Bytes......

it sounds like malware - there are quite a number of "add-ins" for IE that do this. They are a pita to get rid of too ...

In IE you can go to Tools - Manage Addons. Disable all of them and see if this resolves the problem.
If not - it could be a piece of malware that has set itself up as a proxy.

Forget all this Firefox and Chrome nonsense (only jesting guys keep yer hair on), I've just had the same problem. MS did an update yesterday (well on my PC anyway). Turn off suggested sites on the tool bar then re-activate then it works again (or it does on mine).

Just noticed that you are using Vista, I'm on Window vxxx.

Am running Vista on an Acer and recently upgraded to IE8. So far have not seen this problem, but the drop down on the address bar picks up selected favouriites and history as well as recently visited addresses - all a bit disconcerting at first.
