Non - Boat mains supply query

A box trailer ( a mobile office) with steel /alloy frame with a mains (250v) electrical set up. External inlet from generator to Two way Distribution board with RCD and 2 Mcb 16 and 6 amp for power and Lighting.
Question: should the steel frame be bonded to the Earth Busbar Bar in the consumer unit? There is an earth cable at present but not connected to the frame.

Almost certainly yes and the generator earth should also be truly earthed.

You should check the "regulations".

Some or all of this may apply. there may be different or additional requirements for this type of installation

When we took the mobile research laboratory out on the road, once we had parked up ready for work, one of the first things after putting the 'pads' down was to bang in an earth spike which was bonded to the chassis.

This was done BEFORE the generator was started and the 'genny' also had an earth spike as VicS stated. This is in case the earth wire between the trailer and generator becomes broken.

Always leave the chassis earth spike in a prominent place just inside your trailer so you don't forget it when you want to use the electrical supply!

Also insure that the neutral and earth are connected at the generator else the RCCD will not work.

Yes all metalwork should be bonded including metal sinks. The idea is that in the event of a contact between live and metalwork the breaker and/or RCD will operate rather than allowing a person to connect themselves between a piece of live metalwork and ground. This would be especially relevant if someone were getting in or out of the structure and touched it while stood on the ground. It could even happen to a passer by.

Thanks to rogershaw for adding that about earthing the generator neutral. He beat me by a few minutes!

If this office is going to be used by employees or visitors then I suggest the electrical installation should be done, or at least inspected, by a qualified electrician. Some certification may be required.
