I am getting a "slapping" noise from the propellor shaft area on my Sadler 29 with the engine in gear..Assumed some line/netting around shaft. Donned my face mask and had a look but the shaft/prop was clear.I noted that there was a little play in the shaft where it went through the bearing in the P bracket.Could the noise be a result of wear in that bearing or it may be the rope cutter.Any thoughts. If the bearing needs to be replaced is that a difficult job?
Thanks

Have you seen the recent threads on www.mikelucasyachting.co.uk where the Sadler and Starlight forums are hosted?

I have never heard a noise that was caused by a worn cutless bearing, even though I have seen some that were badly worn. A Stripper can be a little noisy if the adjustment is not quite right, although I don't recognise 'slapping'. Is your gearbox oil level OK? Is the shaft straight? What type of propeller? If folding/feathering is it in good condition with no looseness?

Just a few ideas that might help.

A rumble from the prop shaft told me that my cutlass bearing had failed earlier this year. Monofilament fishing line wrapped around the shaft. A couple of years ago a clicking sound was the sign of the bearings in the Stripper needed re-newing.

It could be any of the above, or also bent shaft or P bracket.
I've also come across strange noises that sounded like transmission when they were actually engine mount movement.
Ease of fitting bearings and removal of old ones depends on what type you have.
