I have Harken st32 primary winches fitted, one of which, instead of the familiar winding noise whilst under load has developed a sudden crunching/ noisy sound, instantly telling that something is not correct. the noise starts even if on hand load is applied. Any experience out there that may advise service or repair. thanks.

Winch service

A winch is a fairly simple mechanical device working in a very harsh environment.
I think they should be opened up inspected and cleaned often.
I feel sure once you have lifted the drum it will be obvious what the problem is . ie not enough lubrication or a part broken. You will become very confident after the first time.
I have seen sophisticated 2 speed winches dismantled lubricated and reassembled in 5 mins on water between short races. I have done my own single speed between tacks in a narrow water way.
If you can't or don't want to open it up try flooding it with a spray can of lubricant WD. That will help at least short term any lack of lubricant and also wash dirt out. good luck olewill
