Here is Dee Caffari letting off white hand-held flares on her return. Imagine if one had misfired!

IMHO those are red flares which when photographed in daylight only appear red around the edges of the flames due to the light intensity at the centre which the digital camera could not cope with. I hope that MCA don't take action for their illegal use!
