No sound from Raymarine Ray 54E VHF radio

I recently connected the Raymarine Ray 54E VHF radio on my new (to me) Rival 32 and no sound came out of the speaker at all. No "beep" when it was turned on, and no sound when the squelch was turned right down, nothing. As I turned the squelch down the "RX" icon appeared at around the point on the dial I would expect to hear static. This suggests to me that the set was "receiving" the static despite no sound coming from the speaker. Has anyone encountered this before and if so what was the cause? My knowledge of electronics is very limited and I would not be able to do my own diagnostics but I would be capable of replacing components if I knew exactly what needed replacing.

Is there a cockpit loudspeaker? If there is one and it was plugged into the back of the VHF, the speaker on the radio set could be disabled. In which case unplugging the loudspeaker cable would allow the radio set speaker to work. If there is a speaker, you expect to be able to hear the speaker but if the cable is damaged it might not work but the plug at the back of the set would still be in place.

I actually have the manual here at home. There is no setting to disable the speaker in the settings. It just mentions that you can plug in a speaker

No, there is no cockpit loudspeaker. The radio had been stored off the boat by the previous owner so I refitted it, connected power and the aerial, but nothing else. Definitely no external speaker.

Hi. Sorry to drag up and old thread but I'm wondering the outcome of this?
Were you able to get it working or did you have to replace?
I have the same Radio, showing the same problem:
I am transmitting, and can be heard by others but I hear no reply.
I see the 'RX' indicator appear when I receive a response but can hear no sound.
When lowering the squelch control into the noise I also see the RX indicator on screen but can't hear any static sound.

I'm sure it's a problem with the audio circuit. I have tried both the built in speaker and an external speaker.

Any advice?

Thanks!
