No radio check?

Was'nt it a pleasure this weekend? Solent Coastgaurd anouncing that they have made permanent, "no more radio checks in Solent area". What is more, apart from a couple on issolated instances, the airwaves were silent! Apart from genuine traffic.

It was a source of amusement, when on a couple occassions an independant 'station' responded to someones request to Solent for a radio check and although it was clear it was not Solent responding, Solent were still thanked!

Sailing Today instead of doing a Radio Check with Solent CG rang up the Radio Regulatory bods - who not being on the Solent didnt know....

But its actually possible to keep the VHF switched on again nowadays - safer, useful and interesting once again.

Now here\'s a thought

Why don't we scuttlebutters set up a private radiocheck service, just for each other. Let's pick a VHF channel that no one ever uses, and we can radiocheck each other to our heart's content, using forum handles, not boat names. And maybe even agree to meet in the The Three Bald Men and One Beard, for a pint of foaming ale. Or two.

"Scuttlebut Radio, Scuttlebut Radio, Scuttlebut Radio this is Twister ken. Anybody home? Over."

"That's a big 10-4 good buddy. Public bar of the Goat and Pederast at HW -1?"

Mike, congratulations, you've probably removed one of the biggest irritations in the Solent, I'm in the queue to buy you a pint!

Thanks

Jim

Good Old Blighty.

I rather think of it as John Major's cricket on the village green, district nurses on their sit-up and beg bicycles, drinkers leaving peacefully when the landlord calls time, trains you can rely on, Uncle Howard polishing his Morris Traveller every Sunday, unarmed and polite policeman, TV that finished at 11.30 in a diminishing white dot, an England test team that could bat for more than 3 hours without a mid-order collapse, footballers who earned less than pop stars, a butcher and a fishmonger and a greengrocer and a bakery on every High Street, a regiment for every county, schoolboys in short trousers, a B movie before the main feature and the national anthem being played at the end of the film, a wide choice of British-built cars and motorbikes (nearly all crap, of course), press button B to get your money back, a ploughman's lunch that consisted of cheddar or stilton with slabs of white cottage loaf and not brie and a baguette, houses that cost approximately 3x average salaries, yachts without promotional graphics all over them (back on thread), etc.

Re: Good Old Blighty.

Thanks for that description - what a wonderful image. A bit like watching Swallows and Amazons again for the umpteenth time. I must watch it again this pm while I'm in the mood!

Blimey - I'd forgotten all about them !!!!

Must admit I used to enjoy the pint on the village green watching the cricket .........

Used to enjoy the tranquility of sailing across the solent just keeping an eye out for the odd Red Funnel ...... and grey one when we were beating crap out of someone !!!

Those were the Days !!!!

I have to admit ....

I was caught singing to Dusty Springfield today ......

But my days have brightened since re-discovering the skill of John Lee Hooker .........

I have to say without the computer and downloads ..... that would not have happened !!

Re: Good Old Blighty.

Starting to look like this is a "Lets show each other we haven't got alzheimers yet" thread.

Well I haven't either and remember much of the same - 'cept the policeman did have a weapon, his belt, and the national anthem was played here before the movie show started (maybe a difference of patriotic importance?).

Private vessels with VHF radios would of been few and far between, if any (didn,t know of anyone, but did know a few with am mf, no one on hf either), so no radio checks needed. I wonder when the VHF maritime service really got going with pleasure vessels?

John
