Hi all,

YBW have expressed concern that I am posting about the weather and potentially promoting my commercial activities. This was done in a polite way, but the underlying reasoning is clear.

I enjoy helping and communicating the weather to sailors, and the feedback and discussions have been very interesting. I have tried to alert you to periods of up coming weather, and answer the "why was that forecast wrong?" style of questions.

If you have found this useful perhaps you should let YBW know and I will then continue to post, I'd also be interested in a copy of any emails.

So, apologies if you have been offended by any commercial references to my company (after all, I am a forecaster by trade), just trying to help and explain a little of this bemusing subject to help you enjoy your sailings.

If anyone wants to commuicate privately my email address is simon@weatherweb.net

Bye for now,
Simon

No. Don't go. How about just removing signature lines so there is no reference to your commercial activities?

I would be sorry to see you go - after all, others have commercial web sites in their signature lines and they seem to be able to stay.

Pity. Very useful and far from offensive

I'll be very sorry to see you go; you were not exactly doing a hard sell.

Hope you can stick around.

Message for KIM

KIM - if Simon removes his sign off line - surely he can carry on posting.? I think knowledge of this sort within the forum adds quite significantly to the value of the forum. Frankly one is exposed to so much advertising on the web that its mostly ignored anyway!

Simon

There's a fine line between self-promotion and giving impartial advice. In my book you have kept your feet firmly on the latter side of the line and I shall be most disappointed to see your valuable contributions curtailed.

Best regards, I have noted your email address and am already a subscriber to your useful weekend forecasts.

Tom

Oh sorry , i thought that the important and usefull information that you were putting in your posts was free! Ok so you run a weather information company! i dont remember you asking me for any money.
It would be a shame to loose your input on this forum as most sailors (all should) are amateur weather forcasters and compairing sesults can only improve our limited experience. We are all on a learning curve and if a proffesional can impart some free advise why stop it.
As said above , others do advertise in their posts, some blatant. If you do go this forum will be the worse for it.
Very best regards
Squidge.

Hoping YBW reconsider...

I too find your posts very informative and am grateful that you spend the time to share the information with the forum. If that in turn generates business for you then I'm fine with that.

Everyone please read this before judgement

This was never intended for public debate and I am deeply sorry, Simon, that you have taken my request to you in the way that you have, despite two carefully worded messages.

I did not, in any of my messages to you, say that you could not post. I'm not going to engage in further public debate about the content of my messages to you because they were intended for your eyes only and you seem to have forecasted a storm out of a tea cup from them, both privately in your replies and now here in public.

I did however point out that, with two URLs, plus a company logo and a series of recent posts commenting on the performance of your own company vis a vis your forecasts, I had received some comments from users themselves about whether I was allowing you to stray too far over the boundaries in terms of commercial use of these forums. This is a regular conversation I have from time to time with other forum users in the marine trade regarding achieving a balance between enthusiasm for contributing and overty advertising and mostly we manage to have those conversations in private, understanding the issues and reaching amicable compromises.

I have not banned you. I have not criticised you in public. I have not thrown my commercial guys after you. I have not even laid down any specific remove A, B or C rules. I have just asked you to be mindful of what are fairly widely understood conventions so that I can be seen to be fair to all who use therse forums. That seems okay to me and I hope it does to others who take the trouble to read this post.

You are not a forum martyr...you are free to post...now can we move on please?

Message from Kim

If you read my post I think you will understand there was no draconian ban at play here; merely a caution for Simon not to be seen to be overtly plugging his services, which has been the interpretation of a few users (not mine) in recent days following the commentary, posted by Simon, on his accuracy of his own services.

The correspondence need not ever have been raised here and you should have been none-the-wiser for what was a private note simply requesting Simon to exercise a degree of restraint.

I try and strike a reasonable balance and in fact have often defended the rights of people with a commercial interest to play a full and active part in these forums.

Hope that clarifies.

At the risk of winning the ybw brown nose award, I think Kim's stance on this is entirely even-handed. Simon's contributions are welcome but the sign off (in the context of the posts to which he contributed) went a bit beyond the pale. I'm sure that if he removes that, everyone will be happy!

Thank you for the response, and Kim, the email was sent privately to me, but the consequences would be public.

Okay, are all okay if I leave my sign off as something like "www.weatherweb.net"?

Needed to get this out in the open and clear so that all know where we stand.
Cheers,
Simon
