Just been informed from someone who was at the Boat Show yesterday, that the 2012 Olympics has toned down and re-clarified the security cordon off the Dorset Coast.
Free passage is allowed through the 'Precautionary Area', however you will be challenged by security police as to your intentions. Those en-route, are allowed to pass through, but you're not allowed to loiter around inside it. Latest details can be found in SailingAlmanac.com.

To spectate and have access through the security screen you must pre-book berthing/anchoring in advance. That'll cost you on average a 1000% above the normal seasonal rates! Only half the berths have been sold.

Now, has the 5 rings committee sorted the winds orf the Bill so that 'loitering' can be readily id'ed??
For our journey to our bit of racing in Plymers, I require winds S/SE 4 min, max F5 (for Memsahib 2 have a totally fun trip). Have them e-mail one wiv the relevant dates of such- since it is within their remit- Oh and cc our Oylpmic Team into my e-mail 2:D

Obviously, all of the world's best sailing meteo experts will be there and will get around the Ouija board everyday to conjure up perfect sailing winds, so you'll have no problems.

No need - they have Lord Coe - the greatest windbag of the age...

Searush's point is very good. If you are trying to make headway against a foul tide in light airs and have no engine, will they forcibly remove you from the area?

Olympic Sailing

We have just go through the Worlds Sailing Championships the preliminaries to the olympics and somewhat larger. While security was not a concern keeping spactators clear was, huge areas of waters were closed off to public boating much to many people's disgust. 6 course areas were designated each about 2.5Nm in diameter. These tended to join together in 5 cases so that only a marked channel was available for entry exit of the marina/harbours so closed off.
There was a total of some 30 Marshal boats ready to see off any intruders. Of most concern however were the 300 accredited coach boats that were allowed in closer. Of course the 50 or so temporary buoys that were set were a problem often coming loose and had to be checked each morning of the 16days of the event.
At least one of my newly made aquaintances has left for UK to help them get it right.
In the end most sailors were happy to stay away. Spectating from a boat was just hopeless. From the shore was much better. TV best. I think those who grumble about the restrictions will just have to realise this is a major event and sacrifices will have to be made.
The final opinions from Perth 2011 (Fremantle) Worlds is that the sailing organisation winds etc were excellent. The related public involved spectacles and fairs were a waste of money as the public stayed away in hordes. olewill
