No cooling water from exhaust?

Urgent bit of advice needed ease if anyone can help?

Just giving the boat a good clean before it goes back to the yard, I've fired up the engine for the first time since October.

Prior to winter I drained the cooling system down through the blue drain plugs - it's a 2009 mercruiser 4.3mpi.

I've closed the drain plugs, and the engine started after about 4 attempts so not bad at all.

My problem is, I don't think there's any water coming from the exhaust. I turned it off straight away.

I've opened the blue drain plugs, and water is gushing into the bilge so it looks like the impeller etc is working ok.

How long should I expect to wait before seeing the 'used' cooling water coming from the exhaust?

And how long is safe to run the engine if it's not cooling (answer is probably not at all!) .

Thanks guys 👍🏻

Is the boat in the water or out of it?
If you run the engine out of the water with the impeller in with no water supply, it can damage the impeller in seconds. Is the impeller water pump in the drive or on the engine?
Also water will not come out of the exhaust if new water is not being pushed in.

Thank you - it's all sorted. I was using a pair of muffs but there was a lot of water coming out of the sides.

I found the "pin through the intake" muffs in the garage and they were much better. Had warm water coming out of the exhaust in no time 😁
