NMEA What does it mean

I have a Lowrance 3500 plotter and it goes on about NMEA 2000 networking can someone explain what this means, can I plug other things into it such as a fish finder or depth sounder and get the info on the Lowrance.

Thanks but whoosh over my head, can we try in lay terms how do we use it and can I connect other units and display the data on the Lowrance?
