Hello Gents
this is a question from a technical numpty (me)
I am looking to buy a new Standard Horizon GX1500E dsc VHF for my boat and i want to connect it to my Magellan Nav 6510.The Magellan uses NMEA version 1.5 and 2, 2001 model, would this be able to talk to the new vhf which i presume uses the new version 3. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
any one know?
( be gentle with me)
Regards

Not sure exactly but I think you will be alright, I connected 2006 DSC VHF to an early 1997 plotter with a very early NMEA version and it worked fine. The VHF is only interested in the Lat/Lon part of the message stream and will ignore everything else, all NMEA message streams appear to be backward compatible. Make sure you set the baud rate in your plotter and VHF to the same speed as it won't work, 4800 or 9600 is normaly ok for older plotters.

I reckon it'll work fine, The newer versions of NMEA are backward compatible with older versions, and the data needed by the radio is just very basic positional and time info. I've just wired up an otherwise redundant old Garmin GPS 45 to my new Navman DSC 7100 VHF and it works perfectly.
