Does anyone have any experience / recommendations.
Do they accept 0183 and 2000?
Are there any diy projects?

Thanks both.
The diy route looks like I have to learn about the Pi.
No - SiteSurfer is doing it with an Arduino, or possibly just a wifi gadget which can be made to act like an Arduino.

and added the esp8200-01 module which is now feeding data to its own access point.
not an arduino that's doing the wifi
GPS data is streaming from the VHF along with (in theory) AIS data which is being forwarded as a UDP feed by the Arduinio.
Arduino is doing the serial comms bit multiplexing gps & ais data then feeding that to the esp board which acts as a wifi access point. .Either way, one thing there isn't is a Raspberry Pi

Correct, however I'm now looking at one of these:
Which will remove everything but the rs482 converter from the equation - at less than £20 in total.

Amazon brought me one yesterday. Not got further than blinking an LED yet.
Wonder if software serial will work on it, or how would you get the nmea to multiplex in there?
I have fitted a multiplexor with Wifi that has been good so far (it's been on-board for about 12 months).

Note sure how useful this is if you want to go home-brew.
I spotted this todayMy main reason for thinking about using this device is to get AIS data to tablet OpenCPN, .
