NMEA to Wifi black box

No - SiteSurfer is doing it with an Arduino, or possibly just a wifi gadget which can be made to act like an Arduino.

Pete

not an arduino that's doing the wifi,,

and added the esp8200-01 module which is now feeding data to its own access point.

Think it's the -01 of these..

Setting a Pi up isn't that difficult. Dirt cheap

Either way, one thing there isn't is a Raspberry Pi :)

Arduino is doing the serial comms bit multiplexing gps & ais data then feeding that to the esp board which acts as a wifi access point. .

Pi is probably easier to set up, outputs NMEA & signalK and can do much more besides, draws a bit more power though. Both ways are cheap as chips

Correct, however I'm now looking at one of these:

Which will remove everything but the rs482 converter from the equation - at less than £20 in total.

Amazon brought me one yesterday. Not got further than blinking an LED yet.

Wonder if software serial will work on it, or how would you get the nmea to multiplex in there?

oohhhh, looks complicated, good luck!
Think I'm lucky I have a plotter that does wifi and can duplicate it's screen on tablets and phones :D

I have fitted a multiplexor with Wifi that has been good so far (it's been on-board for about 12 months).

this one... http://www.shipmodul.com/en/miniplex-2wi.html

Note sure how useful this is if you want to go home-brew.

It's a balance between cost of off shelf and effort of diy.
The one you are using appears to be about €250 which, to my pocket, is on the moderately expensive side.
My main reason for thinking about using this device is to get AIS data to tablet OpenCPN, which is a secondry backup device, chart plotter being primary.
A replacement Wifi enabled AIS transcever engine would probably be more cost effective and it would be an upgrade as my current AIS unit is Rx only.
