I am having problems getting NMEA data from a Raymarine E85001 box into my laptop, as an input to Seaclear chart plotter software.
My laptop only has USB ports. So far I have conected the USB plug's green and white cable to the NMEA out, and also to the RS232 out, but the signal doesn't seem to be picked up by the laptop. Certainly the programme says it cannot open the COM port.
Am I missing a driver? If so, any suggestions which?

You cannot feed NMEA direct to USB.
A serial to USB converter is needed. Try ebay.

See here for a little more detail on the two types of connection (an answer to a different though similar question, so "your nine-pin" doesn't refer to you).

Without meaning to be rude, what you were trying makes about as much sense as wiring a morse key into an office network socket with the intention of replying to an email.
