What is a nmea interface and why might I be likely to need one? I am considering some additional electronics but word of this thing and suggested cost has troubled me. I have Raymarine generally and Furuno GPS.

You quite possibly already have one check on your GPS manufacturers web site to see if yours has a NMEA output. If you go to the new type GMDS? radios you will need the output

The NMEA interface is designed by the National Marine Electronics Association (check www.nmea.org for details). It is a widely used -specially in yachting_ method for enabling various pieces of marine equipment to exchange information by using standard info blocks. Technically it is a bus structure with one (1) sender (talker) and a number of receivers (listeners), so equipment can be connected in parallel up to a certain maximum.

Examples are the interconnection between the GPS and radar, autopilot, VHF, but also depth, speed and wind can participate if provided with NMEA.

Happy sailing, Steffen
