I'm trying to connect a garmin 225 plotter to a furuno (new to me) radar.

I have all leads, and a choice of two plugs for the radar, one black and one grey plug. plugs are wired different..ie, White, black, yellow, green in different positions

Does anyone know which are needed?

Are any combined?

I've used just the nmea out (blue ) at the garmin end and black ground?

As far I know I've the radar set up to display..stil nothing

Your help would be appreciated!!

<font color=blue>Isn't this information on the Garmin website? If not email them, they are very helpful.

you will need to set up the NWEA feed from the Garmin unit in the setup area, and the same on the radar to tell it to receive that baud rate etc.
I have a 215 (same but B&W) and provide a feed to a Lowrance unit. Once I had realised I needed to configure the ports is was a doddle.
Purely from memory it's either the blue or orange from the garmin - one can be either in or out I think.
If you are having trouble you have something fundamentally wrong somewhere - should be easy with modern units.

The colour codes I think

The NMEA out from the Garmin is blue, and ground is obviously black. For Furuno (whose instructions are often unhelpful and condescending omho, though the kit is great) the colours are Yellow = NMEA in, Green = Ground.

Therefore connect the Garmin blue to Furuno Yellow, and the Garmin Black to Furuno Green. Ignore the Furuno white/black.

I dont know which of your 2 Furuno leads (grey or black, but I'd guess black) is correct, but try both as unlikely to bust anything. you have to activate "Nav" on the Furuno control panel to see the ex-Garmin data on the radar screen.

I'm pretty sure this is right, I did one last weekend, let me know if it works

Re: The colour codes I think

Thanks for that guys, it's been very helpful and it gives me loads of other options.

(I agree the Furuno kit is great, but the manual and wiring diagram, lacks the detail non experts require!)

I know that it should be straightforward, so I'm going to trace all the wiring back and I've another GPS to try for output, just in case.

I'll let you know when it works

more boring detail

If you have doubts about whether your GPS is "talking" on the NMEA out wire, put a voltmeter across the NMEA out and ground. It is a blip blip signal but you should see most voltmeters reading about 3v intermittently, if it's working.

Also, as mentioned above, you need to configure the Garmin (via menus) so that it is "talking" NMEA 183 and not proprietary Garmin language. This is easy to do via menus, if you have the manual.

You are unlikey to need to configure the Furuno, as it will only accept NMEA inputs. However if it is old it might be listenening for version 1.5 of NMEA183, and the Garmin might be talking a later version, in which case adjust the Garmin output via menus. The sentences are different. If your Furuno is Version 1.5 of NMEA, it needs to listen to sentences GLL and VTG from the Garmin (these are latlong and speed over ground). Whereas if the Furuno has newer version of NMEA183 it will be listening for sentence RMC (which is a composite sentence, containing lat long and speed). So, if it still doesn't work, check that Garmin is set to "talk" the same version of NMEA that the listener (Furuno) is listening for. Remember, you have to adjust the talker, not the listener.

You are unlikely to need to configure the baud rate. Leave at 9600 or 4800
