NMEA connection chart plotter

I have a Navman chart plotter with integral aerial mounted in the cabin of my Harmony 34. It frequently loses it's satellite signal, presumably due to the fact that it is located inside.
Can anyone please advise me, if I connect the NMEA out connection from the GPS, which does have an external aerial, to the NMEA in on the chart plotter, will the chart plotter take it's position from the GPS instead of relying solely on it's own built in aerial?

Looking at the manual for my Navman 5500, it says:-

13-3 DGPS setup
Internal GPS
Disable or enable the TRACKER’s internal GPS
receiver. Disable this if a non-standard GPS antenna
that sends NMEA data is installed.

So reading this, I would say yes.

Thanks for that Philip. I think mine is a 5505i, I'll look the manuals out and check which wires I need to join up.
