Having recently installed the above I am keen to make the most use of its ability to share info. My next job is to connect my Radio Ocean R4800 with AIS, which is nmea0183, using a Raymarine seatalk to NG converter. If I get the wiring wrong, will I do any harm to the other toys on the system? Any advice is welcome. Thanks. Alan

I don't know the converter you plan to use but the Actisense NGW1 Gateway that I installed in my system is very easy to wire as the NMEA2000 side just plugs into a tee connector and all I had to do was identify the NMEA 0183 output that I wanted to use and connect it. Internal isolation makes it fool-proof as incorrect wiring does no harm.

This might be useful for you. I have my RO4800 connected to a Garmin GPSMAP750 with older Seatalk converted to NMEA0183 by the ST50 Tri data.

Thanks for that. I already have the manual but I can see from your diagram what you have achieved. I'm hoping that by using the 2000 backbone I can avoid using yet another set of wiring on nmea0183. That's what nmea2000 is for, isn't it?

Please let us know what device you use to convert the NMEA0183 as if ever my complicated connections ever play up I would like to simply connect to the NMEA2K network. It is a pity the RO4800 isn't equipped form NMEA2K direct connection.

If there was a reasonably priced VHF out there, I would consider changing but the only one I've found N2k is an icom at over £500. The RO 4800has a wireless 2nd station. Not perfect but nice to have.
I've just bought an Actisense converter. Ive no doubt it will accept GPS from the plotter and will hopefully allow dsc info to the plotter, but the big question is, what will happen to the ais? Having gone down the route of nmea2000 I want everything to connect! As a side issue, the cumulative costs of buying all those cables and tees is huge, but once your in, there's no choice but to continue. If you buy a new toy to connect, you have to allow a further £50 for cables. Don't think just because they include a drop cable, that's the end of it, it's not. And as for being able to connect Garmin to Raymarine, you can add another £30 for a devicenet cable because the plugs don't match. I think I've been suckered into a big con here.
