nmea 0183 v2.3

I recently installed a Garmin 172c but have found that it will not talk to an ageing Silva Star Nav repeater. I've looked at the various specs for repeaters and their NMEA sentences are always short of a few characters compared with the Garmin's NMEA output(v2.3). Has anyone found a repeater to talk to a 172c Chart plotter.

have you tried talking to Silva to see if the software in the repeater can be upgraded?
