thinking of changing over from a sailboat, and fancied a nelson. swmbo thought the ones we could afford too small (mainly because they were too narrow) and preferred a nimbus 32. but its much lighter - so will it do the cross biscay (short crossing) that I want it for?

what do nimbus owners think about them?

Mmm, depends how long the short crossing is. Most motor boats dont have a range of more than about 200miles at cruising speed although you might double that at displacement speed but I would'nt want to do a long sea passage in a boat like the Nimbus at displacement speed. In a motor boat, you will tend to do more coastal hops of say 100miles a time waiting for settled weather to do it. The advantage of having a fast boat is that you can wait for weather windows to venture out
The Nimbus is a fine boat, well made and a good buy but if you really want a heavy weather boat you are limited to a Nelson type boat
Have you looked at Aquastars which have Nelson type hulls but are generally cheaper and a bit more liveable inside?

Deleted User has said almost all - but - look also at the Seaward range because although they a slimmer than the Aquastar they are much more sea kindly, especially in a beam sea. Try the Seaward web site www.seaward-m.com as there are always 2 or 3 boats for sale.

I have owned a Nimbus 345 and currently own a 38 Commander. There is no comparison between a Nelson/Seaward type boat and a Nimbus, the former are great sea boats but lack accomodation space. The Nimbus is a great cruising boat and has adequate capability at sea, ie in the sort of conditions that most of us go boating in. A lot depends on your budget of course.

we've had a Nimbus 32 for the last year and although have not got around to any offshore crusing we have done a few miles in her. We've got the single 230hp Yanmar engine and with a 280l fue ltank will give range of about 140 miles - its basically 2 litres per mile at crusing speed of about 21knts. Flat out we get 27kts but as I say 3100rpm gives a nice ride at just over 20kts.

Not sure how it compares to Nelson but certainly is comfortable for living abouard for a while - go for the bedroom configurartion which has a permanent double bed though as we have found that the matress is not too good a fit and moves about alot in the convertible table bed option.
