Hi, we are considering buying a Nimbus 380 Commander and wondered if anyone had an accurate air draft measurement for them (mast down)? More specifically has anyone tried to take one on the french canals south of Paris, or is that asking for trouble? Any advice much appreciated!

Funnily enough we were trying to find the answer to the same question recently. A Motorboat Owner review in the Oct 2019 copy cited just over 4m, which struck me as being a bit high and certainly too high for the canals down to the Med if it is accurate.

I’ve found two previous sales details where one broker lists it as 3.2m, another at 3.4m. all routes to the Med seem to show a height restriction of 3.4m so it sounds pretty tight!

Yes, 3.5m is oft cited as the max for the trip to the Med

I had similar related questions - Does anyone know how the fuel consumption on a Nimbus fairs at Canal Speeds - 4 knots ? Is it happy at that speed for weeks on end ?

Looking at a 340 Coupe, with two Yanmar 4LHST 230 hp, would be interested in any owners experience of extended slow running and fuel consumption. Also typically what would you expect to burn at 12 knots and 20 knots ? Never get a straight answer from the brokers.

Can’t give specific for the particular boat but on shafts a rule of thumb is 1nm to the gallon at 20 knots - that is around what we got on our Broom 41 - larger boat so you my get better, perhaps getting towards 1.5nm to the gallon. On similar sized boats with planing hulls and outdrives (more efficient than shafts) we have averaged around 1.7 to 2 nm to the gallon if that helps to put it into perspective.

At 12 knots it will depend upon the hull - it can be a very un-economical speed on a planing hull and it may not sit comfortably and may not be a realistic option for cruising.

On your earlier question about river / canal speeds perhaps work on a gallon per hour per engine - may be a bit less.

Only my estimates based on boats we have owned and someone with Nimbus specific experience may be able to better advise.

Thanks Greg, much appreciated, A whole new world moving from sail ?

Oh yes, fuel bills simply don’t equate with a Yacht!
The thing to remember is that for most mobo owners fuel bills are not the main portion of expenditure on boating each year.
