Spoken to various so called Mercruiser experts and no-one can find what I need. Kn*b-head at Barrus even said it wasn't a Mercruiser part. What sort of cowboy outfit is that? Only ones to be interested are French Marine who are looking into it for me. I'm looking for a dash mount switch rather than the single lever control type. Are all Mercruiser parts a nightmare?

Yes. I really struggled and in the end had to buy a second hand control unit from the USA. I also ordered a new stern drive. Promised delivery 3 weeks. Actual delivery 16 weeks. Say what you like about Volvo spares but at least they come in good order and in time.

Mercury description / part number "Surface Transom Mount Switch Kit 87-815200A1" ?

Not exactly but close. Plug not compatible with pump socket.

Never mind, close but no cigar. the connection must be pretty simple though at the pump if it's a standard one ( up/ down connection) . 2 pole high quality waterproof connectors are very cheap

When I had mercs they were far easier to get parts than volvo at a reasonable price because you can buy direct from the states. Volvo don't allow their stateside dealers to sell out of state.
Doug russel marine used to have an online parts catalogue and delivery in 3 days or so - they are rebuilding their website but give them a ring.
In the UK marinepower in deacons were useful, but barrus prices.
Tom Parker (tompa marine, now based at shamrock quay) has a mercruiser parts catalogue etched on the inside of his eyelids. If he doesn't know , no one knows.

I know you often hear people moaning about Volvo prices on here but I have never had issue with getting any parts from them, I would think the biggest problem with Mercruiser is the importer/supply chain has been very inconsistent over the years with many different companies being involved, they also supply drives for other engine manufacturers like Nanni and Vetus where you get a combination of both manufacturers parts, I done a bit of research a few years back with a view to doing a repower but decided not to go ahead at the time, one thing that put me off was the future supply of parts if the partnership ended, it’s a shame as the Mercruiser products are quite reliable if looked after but my decision will always be based on the support available if it all goes wrong

My Mercruiser leg uses a standard two way press toggle switch to go up and down, which I bought to match all the other switches on the dash. No special switch needed and the wiring was just to the pump, standard 12v wiring. I also have a push button to over-ride the up position for trailing. Not sure why you need Mercruiser switches and harness, if there even is one.

Mainly because I can't find a wiring diagram either. The harness goes from the switch to the trim limit switch on the drive as well as the pump which has three connections on it. Seems a shame to do a brand new install without the right bits for this one area.

Ok, sorry, I don't have the latest manual.

You could buy the manual for your drive; expensive but very good.

Or, maybe try the forums at iBoat: http://forums.iboats.com/forum/engi...ance/mercruiser-i-o-inboard-engines-outdrives Read the stickies first - loads of useful diy into there; this page for example: http://forums.iboats.com/forum/engi...miscellaneous-mercruiser-information?t=329915

If you can't find what you're looking for in the stickies; sign up and ask the question. Stick to their forum etiquette and they are incredibly helpful and friendly.

Update. Made up the loom from trailer cable, (Doubled both power lines while the rest were the same diameter as the trailer cable). Took an hour and probably saved a fortune if I had been able to find the mythical Mercruiser harness.
