Harmony launches in Littlehampton on Monday

on Tuesday Bill and I am leaving there an hour before mid-dayish high water

arriving at chich harbour entrance at low tide and we will then head up towards Hayling Island co and get as close as we can before the light goes

we will then pick up a mooring until the tide lets us into Hayling Island Co pontoons some time before midnight

I have never been in there - not sure Bill has either

I understand withies are involved

I will be using the supertorch

any local knowledge gratefully considered

I kept a boat there many years ago. I would recommend going in during daylight the first time. I recall quite a dog leg as you get near the pontoons, only marked by withies. Plenty of buoys to pick up further out.

Fortunately centaurs are reputed to take the ground quite well:)

A good flash light should help. Along with your patented pea stick

The entrance isnt difficult but easily missed, especially in the dark. Look out for a porthand mark "Mill Rythe" If you find that then the channel into Hayling island yacht co is just after it. Look out for and ECM and a stb hand mark. That is the entrance to the channel. You wont get in at low water though. The entrance to the channel is about a meter above CD until the next stb mark. After that you have a bit more depth, not a lot though. Its fairly well marked most of the way in. The channel then sort of splits with an odd arrangement of bouys . You will need the southerly channel, you'll see all the masts anyway so will have a good idea of where to go.

HW on tuesday is 1231, I would say that you should be able to get straight in if arriving there around 11. A couple of hours eitherside of HW and you should have water in the channel. Cant see you needing to hang around waiting for the tide.

it is a rather tricky approach - best advice is to call the yard themselves and ask them where the channel is these days (it does move a bit over time). You can't head directly for the pontoon by have to take a turn around a marker post well to the left of the pontoons. Bilge keelers should be fine but there really isn't much room for error in a fin keel with a 6' draft. However the bottom is all very soft mud so you can push your way through.

IIRC there is a line of moorings that you follow to get you to the branch in the channel that leads to HYC (the left) then you head for the post mentioned above, turn round that and head for the pontoons.

Actually just googled it - check this (if it works)

https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@50.8047885,-0.9657845,527m/data=!3m1!1e3

Shows the channel clearly. They seem to have more moorings than when I was last there which makes it easier

and the peastick never lies

however, if I can come up with the flood then mistakes are soon forgiven by physics

and I might as well learn how Harmony behaves when invited to kiss the bottom

Dylan

PS - anyone else fancy joining for the trip?

- those with excellent local knowledge most welcome

depart Littlehampton at about 12 tuesday morning

bump into HYC pontoons at about 11.00 tuesday night

D,

Have never done the channel myself, but its time to see who else I can get to bite :D

If you have time run it with your duck punt and GPS track then set autopilot to follow the line back in :D I guess time will defeat you on that escapade. The harbor might have some waypoints to assist you, even if you do not follow them.

I am no good with Google but I think that image bedouin has posted might be dated 2014? it has clear lines where the deep bits are could be another point of assistance if you have Google earth on your phone/ tablet with GPS. Plug them into your plotter set the Autopilot to follow :D

As for use of peastick you are the expert on that and its probably the best thing to follow just remember to re-calibrate it from Harmony :D

Well, I seem to be off duty on Tuesday, so hoiw could I pass up the chance to sail with Dylan....I can't. Just wondering if there's any chance of a lift back to Littlehampton where the jolly green giant (my Passat) would be parked? I daresay alternative arrangements could be made.

I am sure cars will be moved around a bit

I could drive to HYC in the morning and drop the micra off there

maybe you could pick me up there

still looking for info on the entrance close to low tide though

The latest Chi bar survey showed 0.7m but that was in October and there have been storms since. Survey is on the Conservancy website.
There is a tide-gauge on the West Pole beacon.
Harbour Office are very helpful.
