Nickel Cadmium Batteries

Sorry if this subject has been asked before but, how often should a previously charged, but unused, NiCad battery be recharged. I am thinking about the rechargeable electric drill I carry on my boat when cruising, but sometimes never have to use. I want to avoid the dreaded memory affect.

To prevent the memory effect run the drill to flatten the battery before recharging.
