Nick called me to say his air filter is very oily and his boat is producing more smoke than ever before and its getting worse. As he has no computer access I am doing it whilst on my hols in Lezardrieux.

I told him the oilier the filter then the les air can pass so therefore more unburnt fuel and hence more smoke.

He wants advice from the panel as to why the air filters are getting oily?

Answers on the back of a fiver..........

The easy answer is he,s got too much crank pressure, the cause is less easy, although the simplist thing to check is the crank breather/s,and the easiest to fix,the worst is general wear of the engine...rings/valve guides, wot engine are we dealing with??
Twin tamd,s just looked him up

Things it could be! if its not, dirty fuel, rope around the prop, seized cutlas, bearing/gearbox (can you turn the shaft by hand?) is smoke blue black or grey?

(1) Turbo seals (have turbos refurbished)
(2) Crank case pressure, On one engine it is most likely glazed bores if used without load to charge batteries on a regular basis? (glazebust) (how many hours and do both smoke?)
(3) Rings are worn (new rings and liners, poss pistons?)
(4) Coked up exhaust elbow where it joins the water flow (a quick easy check)
(5) Injectors incompitent (need a refurb)
(6)Injection pump operating incorrectly Re calibrate & refurb
(7)Valves and stems leaking (head off and check / refurb )

Start with the initial, easy relevant items (4)

Something to think about
Regards
Rob

Thanks all for this advice. My engineer reckons that the turbos are OK but is going to pressure test the engines in the morning.

His current hunch are injectors as the soot has been getting worse and smoke is now more noticable at start up. We have been getting more soot on a trip from Hythe to Yarmouth than our maiden voyage from Thames to Hythe although the boat is performing much the same as before.

I spoke to another Corniche owner at the weekend with the same engine set up (TAMD41b's) who does get soot as Corniche's tend to but nothing like the 'orrible black stuff that we have endured of late.

Thanks to all and Col for advice on the phone

Nick
